In September 2016, was invited to be a judge in the 2016 Great BC Bake Off that was part of BBQ Off The Bypass at Well Seasoned – a local gourmet store. The bake off was focused on pies. Sweet, Savory, Tarts, or anything goes!
What an honour it was to be asked by the nice people at Town Hall Brands.
I had a small problem.. I had recently broken my shoulder and the hubster had major surgery just a few weeks before. We weren’t in great condition but we were determined to make it to the event. While the hubster was trying out the great BBQ I was judging pies from local bakers.
There were at least 20 entires. The many judges were split into 4 teams and each team judged several pies.
I completely admire pie bakers! It’s a tough task to turn out a great pie each and every time. I consider myself in the learning process for pie baking. Flavours I have… pies still elude my tender mercies.
I tasted 5 pies and a batch of scones.
- Apple Sausage Pie
- Butter Tarts
- Apple Pie
- Caramel Apple Pear Pie
- Peach Mango Pie
- Bacon Cheddar Scones
We judged on appearance, crust, originality, and taste. What a task!
In the end we spent about 45 minutes tasting and marking our scores. The final results were tallied and released on line a few days later.
The winner from our group was the Butter Tarts .
All of the entries I tried were delicious.
Thank you to BBQ Off the Bypass, Edible Canada, Well Seasoned and Town Hall Brands for allowing me to be a part of the 2016Great BC Bake Off!
